General Education Requirements

Skills emphasized include communication, research methods, critical thinking and analyzing and synthesizing information. Students should expect their general education program to:

All students are encouraged to work closely with their academic adviser to select the most appropriate general education program and to assure that the basic requirements have been met.

Concentrations
A concentration is a cohesive set of ten upper-level courses (40 quarter credit hours) approved by the faculty for use in meeting AUK’s General Education Requirements. Concentrations may be disciplinary or interdisciplinary, and some may require prerequisite course work. AUK offers concentrations in 4 areas of study. Students are required to complete two concentrations and one minor in order to receive their degree.
A complete list of concentrations, including course requirements, follows.
Concentration: Management (40 Credits)
The management concentration prepares students for management and specialist careers in a variety of enterprises and organizations. Through this focused area of study, students develop the skills and concepts needed to become effective leaders, ethical decision makers, and creative innovators. The management curriculum provides both depth and flexibility in its offerings so that students can maximize their educational experience.

Minors
AUK offers students a number of academic minors to complement and enhance their undergraduate studies. Students often choose a minor to develop personal or professional interests beyond their chosen degree program. Minors require the completion of five upper-level courses (20 quarter credit hours) in a designated area. This section of the Undergraduate Bulletin lists course requirements established for the approved minors offered by AUK.
At AUK, a minor is defined as a thematically related set of courses consisting of no less than 20 quarter credit hours, taken from a discipline or an interdisciplinary area distinct from the student’s major program of study. Completion of a minor results in a formal designation on a student’s academic transcript upon graduation from AUK.
Currently there are 3 minors offered throughout AUK. Students are required to complete one minor in order to graduate. Minors completed in designated areas within the College of Liberal Arts may be used to fulfill a portion of the university's general education requirements. The full list of minors offered at AUK is provided, with an asterisk indicating approved College of Liberal Arts minors. This list is followed by a detailed description of the course requirements for each minor.
Minor: Legal studies (20 Credits)
The minor in legal studies is for students interested in the study of law and legal institutions and in the relationship of law to other aspects of society and culture. The law extends throughout contemporary political, social, and economic systems, playing an important role in shaping the conduct of life for both individuals and institutions. It is important for students to understand the forces that shape law, the way laws have been used and understood by a variety of people in differing historical circumstances, and the consequences of law for contemporary life. Political, sociological, historical, and philosophical approaches to legal phenomena are included in the course of study. Recognizing the critical role that law plays in societies, the minor in legal studies is designed to guide students to courses that will deepen and expand their understanding of law as practiced, especially its influence on social and economic institutions.
