Donating to AUK

AUK > Donating to AUK

It is the aim of the AUK Trustees that AUK programs be self-sufficient based on tuition fees, while raising money from outside contributors – grant-making bodies, corporations, and generous individuals – to support capital investments and to endow faculty positions and student scholarships.

It is this international financial support – plus generous support from RIT – that allows AUK to deliver a world-class RIT education in Kosovo at a greatly lower cost than the same education in the United States.

AUK’s legal structure is typical of an American private university. There is no “owner” as would be the case for a for-profit company. All AUK’s funds must be reinvested in the university, its programs, and its students. It is not allowed, by law, to pay monies to outside parties (such as Trustees) except for actual goods and services received.

The university is managed and financially supported by a New York State non-profit trust, the American University in Kosovo Foundation (or AUKF-New York). AUKF-New York has a subsidiary in Kosovo, the American University in Kosovo Foundation (New York), registered in Prishtina as an International NGO, which delivers technical assistance to the university in the form of raising grants and donations and hiring American instructors.

The university itself is a Kosovo non-profit trust. The Boards of Trustees of the New York and Kosovo entities are identical, and the financial statements of the New York and Kosovo entities are presented in consolidated form except where needed for legal reporting reasons. Both the New York and Kosovo entities have been recognized as having Public Benefit Status by the Government of Kosovo.

The American University in Kosovo Foundation is recognized by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service as a section 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. United States taxpayers may deduct contributions to the Foundation from their income taxes to the extent permitted by law.

The American University in Kosovo is a Kosovo NGO with Public Benefit Status, to which Kosovo citizens and business may make contributions and deduct them from their taxes to the extent permitted by law.
