Welcome Party
Was the first event organized by the Student Government this year to give a warm welcome to freshman students and a warm welcome-back to others. It included free entrance as well as live music for all AUK students. DJ Pamon with his Hip-Hop and RnB music made a wonderful atmosphere for all participants, while Edona Rashitaj and her band performed live providing a mix of rock and traditional songs.  This party was organized in Sheshi 21 and AUK students had a chance to have lots of fun.

Soccer Night: Real Madrid vs. AC Milan
Soccer Night was another initiative of the Student Government which intended to give AUK students the opportunity to enjoy some time together.    More than a hundred students participated at this interesting event.  Student Government sponsored from its budget free pizza, beer, and a cake for the fans of the wining team.  The free American Pizzas were prepared voluntarily by Filiz Elshani and other students who were happy to support this initiative. An overhead projector was provided by AUK Student Government which was located at the Walker`s cafeteria. At the end, this event proved to be a good choice for having fun within AUK.

Scholarship System
After a long discussion with AUK board and many meeting and discussions initiated by the Student Government, AUK has managed to change the scholarship system. The new system gives the students the opportunity to receive scholarship based on their academic performance. In order to get a scholarship, at the end of the academic year a student must achieve a GPA of at least 3.4 and more. The higher the GPA rate is, the higher is the value of scholarships. Thus, these changes encourage students to work even harder to accomplish their goals.

Charity for Shkodra
Floods in Shkodra have proven to be one of the most destructive natural disasters in decades. SG undertook the initiative to help people of Shkodra. At first, the idea was to leave two boxes (one at the reception desk and the other one at the Walker`s cafeteria) available for students and staff to donate.  Wanting to do more, we decided to go to each class and ask all the students who did not have the chance to contribute, to be part of this charity initiative. In the end, the sum that we collected was around €500. We decided to transfer this amount to the Red Cross in Albania, through our contacts at the University of Shkodra.  The representatives of Red Cross and University of Shkodra were very grateful towards AUK and highly valued the Student Government's initiative.

Establishment of the official Facebook page
Friday forums, parties, and other events concerning AUK from now on are going to be officially posted on Facebook apart from emails received in our AUKmail. AUK used to have an “official” Facebook page, but apparently it was not being updated. Thus, the need for being informed on time led us to a refresh of this page. Since almost each student has a Facebook account, and most of them are regular users, this is the easiest way to be informed on timely manner. Now, this page is being regularly updated by SG admin. In addition, it also serves as a discussion tool for issues raised by students and for the students so that they can express their opinions and contribute to change.

Suggestion box
Considering that many students do not feel free to give their opinions, SG thought of having a Suggestion Box. This suggestion box helps students give their ideas, opinions and possible complains about anything regarding AUK anonymously. SG checks the suggestion box on regular basis, discusses the issues raised during the meetings, addresses them to the appropriate departments in AUK, and feedback is provided to students.

Basketball Match
Student Government supports sport activities through different clubs that are formed by the students.  In cooperation with the Basketball Club, SG organized the first basketball match between AUK basketball team and EUROSPORT College. The whole student body was invited to voluntarily participate and a professional coach selected the best players. It turned out to be a successful match and cooperation, with AUK basketball team being the winner.

Tutors
Academic Support Center currently has tutors for English and Math. Whenever the demand for a certain challenging subject increases, Student Government tries to provide this service to student body by finding skilled and available students to help others in the subjects they are struggling at. The tutor students are paid a modest amount of money and are allowed to use this experience as a CO-OP.

IT Access Points and Email Server
Student Government received many complaints about the poor performance of wireless network in certain areas of the AUK Building. Once this issue was addressed with the IT Department the response was quite fast and the problems were resolved. Apart from improving/adding access points in some classrooms, IT Department upgraded the Email Server in a very short period of time.

Independence Party
This party was organized by AUK SG in order to celebrate the 2nd birthday of our state. More than 200 students gathered at Tease Club where they were provided with tickets which allowed them to buy free drinks (beers, tequilas). Music performers Rona Nishliu and the Jingles Band together with DJ Pamon and “Tupanat” (the drums) brought a lively and celebrative atmosphere among students and staff.  According to students’ feedback on AUK Facebook Official page as well as through direct conversations, they considered this party as the best party organized by AUK ever.

Admission to Campus after 22:00hrs
Up until this Student Government took this mandate (2009/10), there was a time limitation which did not allow students’ access to AUK premises after 22:00hrs.  Student Government has initiated this policy change after taking into consideration the complaints of some students and the obstacles it posed to the availability of AUK campus to those students who used it as a studying area. From now on, students can enter the campus at any time by just showing their students IDs to the guards.

Extension Cables Installation
The need for extension cables was more than obvious in our campus due to an increased demand by the students to recharge their laptops. SG made this possible with the help of AUK Maintenance staff who installed several extension cables in each classroom, including those installed at the Walkers cafeteria. Now students have just enough plugs to charge their laptops.

Senate Elections
Senate Elections were organized for the first time ever at AUK. The whole student body was invited to apply for each position as a senator and then the voting process was also organized by the newly elected student government executive committee. It was an absolutely transparent and according-to-the-constitution election process which led to the formation of Student Senate.

The list of ongoing/future activities:

  • Lockers
  • Smoking area
  • Yearbook
  • Extension of cafeteria
  • Modification of SG Constitution
  • Acting Club – the play
  • Walkers- hygiene

Charity  Party - Student Project
AUK Student Government decided to support the initiative of Dardan Sylaj, a senior student whose senior project was dedicated to helping 20 poor families. This project also included collecting clothes and finding donors to support this event. It resulted with great support by many donors. The last phase of the project was organizing a Charity Party. Student Government made its contribution by sending emails to all AUK students inviting them to participate in this event. Besides, SG also contributed by giving free beers for 200 first attendees. In the end, the party also resulted to be very helpful in raising donations for the poor families.

Football Night - Inter vs. Chelsea - Champoins League
Based on the fact that the first Football Night organized by SG was very successful and everyone enjoyed it, we decided to organize another similar event. The event took place on March, the 16th 2010 at Walker`s. A big overhead projector was again provided for this purpose. Besides, there were free Beers, Soft Drinks and BBQ offered to all the students attending the match. These were all sponsored by the Walkers` cafeteria.  As a result, all the participants enjoyed their time and were very satisfied with this organization.

World Down Syndrome Day
Charity Club marked the World Down Syndrome Day with the motto “Learn about me” by engaging in organizing the event on March 21th. This included performances of people with Down syndrome, exhibition of photos and pictures done together, cocktail, and entertainment program with singers. Surveys, posters, and flyers were part of the projects, too. The aim of this project was to raise awareness of the community about Down syndrome and to make these people feel themselves an important part of the society. Prior to this, members of Charity Club had been socializing with people with this syndrome by visiting them, taking pictures together, painting, etc.

Interventions in Academic and Financial Affairs
Student Government has been very vigilant and has used its authority to participate in decision making when it comes to the financial benefits of AUK Students.  As such, SG made efforts and proved this when taking actions even in cases where no one was expecting or questioning anything.  As a result, SG made it possible for all senior students who have no more than two 4-credit courses and the senior project (2-credits) to pay less for their final quarter at AUK.  SG made a recommendation to the Academic Services and Financial Office to move the 2 credits from the Spring Quarter to Winter Quarter.  By doing so, the remaining two 4-credit courses were paid at a price of 1,600.00 EUR per quarter as opposed to the normal price of 1,983.00 EUR.  With this activity, more than 8 AUK students were positively affected by saving 383.00 EUR each.

Reading Spaces – Accommodating Students’ needs
Student Government once again took into consideration complaints from student body and arranged a meeting with AUK management to discuss the reading spaces issue. It resulted in Lab 3 becoming a reading space where students can go and read in silence, individually. On the other hand, taking into account the fact that many students need to work in groups due to many projects and group assignments which are common in our university, Lab 2 is now a space where groups are allowed to go work and discuss together.
